Sad Songs from the Heart of Europe is an award-winning Finnish theatre performance of an internationally working theatre ensemble sadsongskomplex:fi.
Sad Songs from the Heart of Europe is a raw and powerful love story about the downtrodden and afflicted. It is a touching vision of Europe – a continent where luck and fortune are greatly divided, and where young men undertake extreme and desperate actions where “the poor are robbed of even the shit from their pants”. Sad Songs from the Heart of Europe looks deep into the human soul with a Dostoevskian merciful gaze. It shows us that beauty, humour, and miracles flicker even at the darkest of times – that love can still trickle through.
The play is written by Finnish theatre director and playwright KristianSmeds (XII European Theatre Prize for New Theatrical Realities 2011), based on Dostoyevsky‘s classic novel Crime and Punishment. The point of view of the story is now Raskolnikov’s beloved Sonya, who finds herself driven to prostitution. Sad Songs from the Heart of Europe is directed by acclaimed Finnish theatre director and playwright Jari Juutinen (5-year state artist grant 2016-20), and solely performed by actress Liisa Sofia Pöntinen (Best Actress Award in Russia 2013, Atspindys Award in Lithuania 2014).This is an unforgettably intimate theatre performance, which has toured internationally to several theatre festivals and venues since 2013.

« Et pourtant
il m’est arrivé un miracle incompréhensible :
je suis tombée amoureuse
infiniment, indéfiniment
contre ma volonté,
contre mon bon sens,
contre toute attente.
Ce que j’appelle mon âme et ma vie
tout n’était que douleur
qui réduisait mon cœur en cendres »
